There are several essential business skills for leaders in today’s ever-changing business climate. Gone are the days when a business leader could be an expert in one or two areas; today’s leaders must be skilled in a wide variety of areas.

Of course, a business leader must be good at managing people. Your professional success now depends on the people who work with and for you. In the “old days” many managers discouraged employee training and development, fearing a more knowledgeable employee would threaten the manager’s job. In today’s leaner business environment, your results depend on what your people can do. There aren’t enough hours in the day for you to accomplish everything—and besides, when employees are given challenging assignments, they feel valued and their performance often improves. Managing people by encouraging and challenging them will pay large dividends for you.

Business skills are a definite necessity. As we’ve already talked about, you’ll be managing people as well as business concepts. Conflicts are a given. Do you have negotiation skills? How about project management training or experience? What about financial analysis? If you don’t have these skills or they’re a little rusty, don’t despair! You can learn them online. There are plenty of management courses available to help you attain a leadership position or climb toward the top of your corporation.

Another essential skill is comfort with technology. No longer will you get handwritten status reports or printouts on green-bar paper. Your business is customer-driven, even if you’re in a non-profit or governmental entity. With all the electronic devices available today, you will hear from your customers, and they expect you to respond to their comments and complaints. You need to incorporate data and analysis of your component or company with what you’re hearing from the customer, and steer things in the right direction.

Are you well organized? While a spotless desk may not be absolutely necessary, you do need to know what’s going on, what deadlines are looming, and what the competition is up to. Every minute counts these days, and you need to have not only today, but this week and probably a good chunk of the month highlighted with the most important items. Don’t damage your career by missing an important meeting or conference call, or miss the next new widget from your competition. Stay organized and get ahead with a time management course.

Last but certainly not least, you have to know your industry. Learning what’s coming up in your company and with the competition is essential. Continuing education in the form of online classes or courses is a great way to keep your skills sharp. The one constant is change, and if you don’t keep up, you’ll fall behind. Online learning is a great way to do that without interrupting your life.

These essentials skills for business leaders are the ones you’ll need to achieve success in your career. Work on developing them, and you may be able to develop yourself into a higher-paying job!
